A four-time \u201cVMAs\u201d winner, Michael was honored with the Video Vanguard Award in 1989.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">George Michael&#8217;s History with MTV<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/awards\/george-michael-tribute-set-2026-vmas-1236344649\/\">Billboard<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGeorge was such a big part of MTV\u2019s history, and my history at the VMAs,\u201d says Van Toffler, returning producer of the 2026 VMAs, citing Michael\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qsmt6UdpmvA&amp;list=RDqsmt6UdpmvA&amp;start_radio=1&amp;pp=ygUUZnJlZWRvbSA5MCBtdHYgMTB0aCCgBwE%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">performance of \u201cFreedom \u201990\u201d<\/a> during the channel\u2019s 1991 10th Anniversary celebration as a particular highlight from his MTV history. \u201cI would strongly encourage that you go back and look at it\u2026 He was in a small room with a choir, and it was unbelievable. And I think that those songs are so rich.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During his lifetime, George Michael won many MTV Awards and was known for iconic moments on MTV.
