Vote for George

Anonymous writes in to tell us that there is a poll on VH1 website "100 Greatest videos of all time". George Michael's videos are featured in 3 categories:

  • Sexy Video - for "Freedom'90"

  • Video Duet - for "I Knew You Were Waiting For Me" with Aretha Franklin

  • Controversial Video - for "I Want Your Sex"

Also, there is a poll on the VH-1 website. This year's VH1 'Divas Live' special (April 10 at New York's Radio City Music Hall) is a tribute to Aretha Franklin. You can vote for your favourite Aretha's song and she will sing the winning track during the show. Maybe there is a chance to get George to appear on this show. So everybody go there and vote for "I Knew You Were Waiting For Me."

Bananarama Cover "Careless Whisper"

According to Ananova, Bananarama's forthcoming album includes Bananarama's cover of George Michael's "Careless Whisper", plus new versions of their 80s hits, "Robert De Niro's Waiting" and "Cruel Summer."

The BananaramaBunch website reports that they have filmed a video for "Careless Whisper" in Barcelona, Spain, which was shot by French director Philippe Gautier. They performed the song on the popular French variety show (M6) and Tapis Rouge (on the French TV channel France2).

According to the Daily Mirror, George and Kenny may not be having many visits from Geri Halliwell. She has had convictions for shoplifting, theft and handling stolen, which may mean she'll be banned from the United States. The article states:

"For most of last year she was in Los Angeles - where she often stays at the home of close friend George Michael and his partner Kenny Goss - working on her new album."

Chayanne Fans for Nancy Committee

As many of you know, besides running Yours Only George, I run the largest Chayanne fan-created site, Chayfans.org. Chayanne has made his fans aware of a baby girl named Nancy who desperately needs a liver transplant, and his three largest fan-created sites have banned together to help raise money for this little baby girl:

Press Release
FROM: Chayanne Fans For Nancy Committee
DATE: March 9, 2001
TITLE: " Fans Of Chayanne To Sponsor Online Auction To Benefit ill Baby "

There will be a benefit auction on the Internet March 14-18th for a 10 month old baby girl named Nancy who desperately needs a liver transplant. Collectable items representing Latin singer Chayanne (who originally championed the cause) will be auctioned off on eBay with all the proceeds going toward the much needed surgery. It is being sponsored and coordinated by a committee made up from three major fans clubs who support Chayanne on the Internet, Cafe Chayanne, Chayfans and La Isla Chayanne dubbed Chayanne Fans For Nancy.

When Puerto Rican superstar Chayanne climbed up on the stage accompanied by a standing ovation recently, to receive a special Jovenes con Legado Award (Youthful Legacy) during Univisions's Premios Lo Nuestro (Our Awards) shows in Miami, FL, he modestly thanked his fans, his island, God, his family and Sony Discos. Then he very humbly dedicated his award (for being a positive role model) to a precious baby girl from Mexico who is in need of a liver transplant. He asked the packed audience and his fans everywhere to help with donations so she can have the life-giving surgery of a transplant from her mother.

He also repeated his plea on several Latin TV talk shows, like Despierta America (Wake Up America) and wherever he was making a promotional appearances for his new album Simplemente. The operation at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami will cost Nancy's very poor mother at least $200,000.

As a result, fans from the three major Internet fan clubs who support him have banded together in an unprecedented cooperative effort to raise money for baby Nancy Ramos Esquivel, spearheaded by this Internet charity auction. In so doing, they hope to raise awareness of the plight of the little girl and amass as much funding as possible. They are also demonstrating their dedication and support of Latin entertainer Chayanne and the high moral character he represents.

Chayanne is adored by millions of fans around the world as the 32 year old heart throb who recently danced in the courtroom when he appeared in two episodes of Fox's Emmy show Ally McBeal, and danced his way around a salsa club with Vanessa L. Williams in the 1998 Columbia film release of Dance With Me. He discovered baby Nancy when his three year old son Lorenzo was hospitalized briefly in Miami with the flu. After Nancy's mother approached him, he visited the baby and was so taken with her plight he vowed to use his celebrity recognition to help.

Nancy's transplant surgery is scheduled for the next few weeks, so the Chayanne Fans For Nancy Committee are asking everyone to take part in their Chayanne collectibles auction from Wednesday, March 14 through Sunday, March 18 on eBay. Items like Chayanne videos, films of TV appearances, magazines, books, T-shirts, and other similar memorabilia will be featured. Or a charitable contribution can be made directly to:

Sotheby's Auction

Sotheby's has an auction of a signed photograph of George Michael and other photographs. The description reads as follows: "Comprising a 10 by 8in b/w publicity photograph autographed in black marker, together with twenty privately-taken colour shots of him (some reprints)."

"Too Jazzy" MP3

Amazon has the MP3 for "Too Jazzy."

Amazon's editorial review reads as follows:

"George Michael's excursions into varied genres have energized several Red Hot albums, including Red Hot + Dance. That disc's "Too Funky" resulted in its own style-switching alternate mix titled "Too Jazzy." It went unheard until its debut here as an exclusive download from Amazon.com."

Well, I wouldn't exactly say it's "unheard," but for those of you who haven't heard it, you can hear it for free at Amazon.

British Rick List

The Sunday Mirror's British Rich List of the 100 biggest money-makers of 2000 includes George in the number 10 spot with $10 million.

The GM Connection

As long-time readers of this site may know, I also am a great fan of Glenn Medeiros, best known for "Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For You." To my delight, Glenn listed George as his favorite singer in an interview with Da Pochoman List, the wonderful mailing list of Sabrina's Glenn Medeiros site. I have asked Sabrina for special permission to reprint a portion of Glenn's last interview:

"The best male voice out there I believe is George Michael. I love the way he sings the songs 'I can't make you love me.'

"My favorite female singing voice is the voice of Celine Dion. I really love the way she sings the song... 'The first time ever I saw your face.'

"Ironically, these two songs I mentioned above are on both of their greatest hits records."

For anyone interested in more information about Glenn, you can visit the Official Glenn Medeiros site or my humble pages. ;-)

Another Lennon Piano on the Auction Block

According to the Associated Press:

"The piano John Lennon kept in his New York apartment just before his death is going on sale... Singer George Michael paid $2.1 million for another Lennon piano last year, and has said he plans to give it to Liverpool's Beatles museum."

The BBC also has an article.

Clarification

Normally, I don't report information from Members Online, the official George Michael fan club, since they have requested that information not be reprinted. However, since the MOL information refutes previous stories in the News Flash, I think it's best to clear up the following points:

  • A release date has not been set for the next single or album.

  • A song has not been written "about anyone in particular" (which I assume is a reference to the Princess Diana single.)

And I'm a bit perplexed why the official site also reported this story if it is in fact not true.

BBC's Top of the Pops magazine recently conducted a survey of readers on the state of pop music. Pop is for Kids

Top of the Pops presenter Jamie Theakston has his say about the recent slamming of pop, according to icShowbiz.

George and Elton

YOGfriend Pat says:

The New York Daily News Rush & Molloy column for Jan. 5th, 2001 has the following article about Master George and Elton Camping in First Class

Who needs an in-flight movie when you have Elton John and George Michael aboard?

The first to arrive at London's Heathrow Airport was Sir Elton, accompanied by boyfriend David Furnish and 36 suitcases. The copious luggage had to be sent ahead on a separate flight. (To be fair, the bags weren't just for their Hawaiian holiday. The Rocket Man needs wardrobe for his concert tour with Billy Joel.)
George Michael arrived later with just the bare necessities: one bag plus his boyfriend, Kenny Goss. The two couples quickly turned first-class into a party.

"They were really camping it up," a friend tells us. "But everybody on board had a ball."

The article is accompanied by a photo of Elton and one of George.

Whitney Houston DVD

YOGfriend Dave wrote in to say that Whitney Houston released a DVD single with "If I Told You That" on it. It has two videos of hers on it and it said "featuring George Michael" right next to "If I Told You That."

YOGfriend Gordon wrote (while I was away on vacation in December):

"Last Christmas" is now #41 on the (official) German single charts.
