1. Let’s Celebrate “George Michael”
   I have read different comments about how sad people have felt after the “25Live” concert and how much he will be missed (even though his music will always be around us). So I thought that I would take a personal inventory of myself and try to find out why I so meticulously place my CD player in my purse every morning and pick out George Michael CD’s from my collection according to the music that I want to listen to on the way to and from work.
   My personal opinion of George Michael is that he is a perfectionist. He himself even says that “He knows when he’s good, but he also knows when he’s not” which means he will only let us hear the best that he can give. And we must also remember that not only is he a superb vocalist but an amazing and eclectic songwriter, producer and arranger. I also see him as a very humble and appreciative man who knows why he is where he is. I see George Michael as an intelligent, articulate opinionated man who was raised very well and still has respect for that upbringing and carries himself with dignity and remains true to himself. I see him as classy yet casual with a stunning sense of humor. And let us not forget the charitable side of him.
   Because I grew up in a musical family (playing cello and piano) I have an appreciation for music of all types. I can listen to anything and George Michael gives me that choice. If I want to be a little soulful I can listen to any number of amazing songs such as “A Moment With You”. If I want to hear smooth jazz “Move On” is one of many that does it for me. If I’m in the mood for a classic standard there’s always “Brother Can You Spare A Dime” (the live version is the best) where his vocal phrasing is impeccable. If I’m in the mood for something fun I think that “Fantasy” fits the bill very well and “Somebody to Love” is just one of his best performances. These are just some examples of the choices I have to face every morning. If I listen to a set of songs consisting of “Understand”, “Precious Box”, “Cars and Trains”, “Soul Free”, “Star People ‘97”, “Something To Save”, “Please Send Me Someone” and “An Easier Affair” I have a real good start to my day.
   You have to listen to his music and lyrics and you will hear not only amazing music but also stories that are real. Take for instance the lyrics to “Praying For Time” are just as relevant now as they were when it was written. “My Mother Had A Brother” and “Round Here” lets you into his personal world and of course with “Jesus To A Child” and “Amazing” he lets us know in no uncertain terms who and what his passion is about.
   With George Michael I have a choice unlike the choice that is given to us by both the world of journalism and the music business that make the choices for us of what we read and listen to. I feel anything that George Michael does is far superior to most of what I hear on the air today or have heard for the past 17 years. But then I may be a little bias.
   I now live with the philosophy of negativity not being an option in my life and to celebrate this new lease on life and the highs and lows I have overcome I used “25Live” (which by the way was an awesome concert) as a way to celebrate. I will use another one of his quotes that I love, “ I feel that God gave me my ball back”, and I went to “25Live” and celebrated with George Michael and everyone that attended and left on a high (natural) that I had not felt in years. I still feel that way anytime I listen to anything that George Michael does and appreciate the amazing and creative talent that he possess and shares with us all.
   So…Am I a little bit obsessed with George Michael and his music???? ABSOLUTLEY! And it’s probably the most positive obsession that I have had in years and I have no problem with it. There could be no way that he would ever stop creating music because it is too much a part of him, but how many artists of his stature have you ever heard say “I don’t need the money” and wants to give away what he creates to benefit charity? Hopefully George Michael will bless us with his presence again in the form of a concert (smaller venue I hope as in “Unplugged”) and I hope it will be “self indulgent” in the way that will please him. I am glad that he has found happiness in his life and wish him the best that life has to offer.
   So, because he is an artist that covers such a vast spectrum of music and life “I Celebrate George Michael” and hope that you will all do the same.
