Letter from George Michael’s Family

George Michael’s sisters, Melanie and Yioda, have just posted a letter on George Michael’s official website www.GeorgeMichael.com.

The letter starts off by saying they are still “struggling” with the loss of George, but “know we hear you, through your amazing and thoughtful messages and that you understand our loss, as we try to understand yours.”

The following appears to be positive news about the release of new material. The documentary, in particular, would be considered one of the projects George was working on. Melanie and Yioda write:

Our aim is to carry on, as we know Yog would have wanted, to share and enjoy his precious legacy and to continue to bring you joy – through his extraordinarily beautiful music.

David, along with Yogs loyal creative team, will continue bringing you all the projects they had been working so hard on for you, exactly as Yog would have wanted…

Please read the entire letter on the official site.

Bros Pay Tribute to George Michael

Matt and Luke Goss, of the duo Bros, will be paying tribute to friend George Michael at their two comeback shows at London’s O2 Arena on August 19 and 20.

Luke Goss is married to Shirley Lewis, long-time backing singer for George Michael.

“My wife was very close to him and in the first few years sung on every single,” Luke said. “So Matt and I had a discussion and Shirley thought it would be a lovely gesture and we both agreed on that.

“I miss him greatly, he was a beautiful man.”

Matt said: “We hope we do it justice. He was one of my favourite singers of all time and he had a big influence on me as a singer, so we’re going to be singing ‘Freedom.’

“It’s going to be a really beautiful moment and we’ve been rehearsing it and getting goosebumps in his honour and we want to raise the roof with that song in his honour.”

Yours Only George Is Remaining Open

Yours Only George - Your Link to the George Michael WorldI have great news!

Yours Only George is going to remain open! As I wrote previously, I was contemplating closing the site because my web hosting fee had doubled and advertising revenue wasn’t even covering the old fee. Fortunately, I was able to find a new web host with a much lower annual fee. Yeah!  I still hope you continue to support our advertisers so that I may keep the site open indefinitely. YOU make a difference.

As I said before, it’s more difficult to update the site as there just isn’t as much news. I also have had a number of unsubscriptions to the mailing list lately.  I am trying my best to post only the most important stuff here, but I do understand that some people aren’t as interested in George Michael news now that dear George has left us.

I do regularly post links on our Facebook and Twitter pages, so make sure to follow those to get all the news.

Thanks for allowing me to run Yours Only George for the last 20 years!

BET Awards Pay Tribute to George Michael

It was a pleasant surprise that the BET Awards paid tribute to George Michael on Sunday.

Kamasi Washington played saxophone while El Debarge sang “Careless Whisper” in tribute to George Michael at the 2017 BET Awards.

Reaction to the tribute has been mostly positive.

Don’t you think George would have been honored that the BET Awards paid tribute to his music? https://t.co/DaDBKsl8FR

Happy Birthday, George Michael!

Today would have been George Michael’s 54th birthday. It is also the 6-month anniversary of his death. George died on Christmas day, December 25, 2016, at his home.

Here is just a small sampling of those celebrating the life of George Michael and his music.

Yours Only George Celebrates Its 20th Birthday

I have to admit I feel sad about celebrating the 20th anniversary of Yours Only George. I even hesitated to say anything at all.

As many of you who follow me on Twitter or Facebook know, I have struggled with the loss of George Michael, maybe even more than most because this site has been a part of my life for 20 years and I have been a fan for 33 years.

On one hand, I’m still mourning George. (I just cried after watching the video for “Angels in Chains.”) On the other hand, I’m debating whether or not to keep this site open. Although I want to keep it open, I don’t know if I can afford to keep it open.

Obviously, when the center of your site dies and there is consequently little news, your site’s audience dies as well.

My webhost renewal is coming up soon and the rates went up. I have been experimenting this past week, trying to see how many articles a week it would take to keep the site open. What I discovered is that it only takes 5 people a day to visit an advertiser to keep this site open. That actually saddens me because I have been operating the site at a loss the last few years. I was always hopeful George would release something new to keep the site afloat.

If you like any small site, please know you do matter. You can easily keep your favorite sites open by purchasing items through their Amazon links or visiting sponsor’s advertisements that are of interest to you.

Thank you for all your support for the last 20 years!

Geri Horner’s Tribute Video to George Michael

Amazon Ad

Get ready for some tears.

I don’t know why I didn’t expect photos of George Michael in Geri (Halliwell) Horner’s video for “Angels in Chains,” her tribute to George Michael.

I don’t know why I didn’t expect the backing sounds of so many famous George Michael songs, such as “Faith” and “Father Figure.”

And I certainly didn’t expect to start crying at the end of it like I hadn’t cried in months about losing George.

I’m not sure whether to thank Geri Horner for this video or to be upset with her. LOL.

Musicians Mention George Michael’s Impact

Amazon Ad

In the past few weeks, quite a few musicians have been talking about George Michael’s influence. Here are a few of the comments:

Elton John opens up about George Michael’s shock death:

I haven’t had the chance to play “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me” in England since George died.

It is such a big part of him and a big part of me.

Losing him was one of the most devastating things that had happened to me for a long long time.

Ronan Keating has revealed the heartbreak he felt in December when his friend and mentor George Michael died.

I got to know George 20 years ago and I grew up listening to George Michael.

He was my musical mentor and he’s the reason I’m a singer today… He’s always been a hero of mine.

It’s still very raw for me that he’s gone, I still can’t believe it.

Alison Moyet has paid tribute to George Michael performing his song “Jesus to a Child” on BBC Radio 2.

Chatting to Jo Wiley, Moyet said she wasn’t close friends with George Michael, but they used to bump into each other regularly, and at one point she was lined up to sing some backing vocals for a project of his.

“He was just such a kind and unpretentious person,” Moyet said.

Grizzly Bear’s Ed Droste described George Michael’s influence:

While George Michael was and will remain one of the biggest pop stars in the world, he enabled me and gave me the strength to be a teeny tiny gay indie public figure, and for that, I am so grateful for George Michael and all he has given me and the world.

Mike Brown recalls his 120 gigs with George Michael and describes him as “amazing” in the studio. It’s about 40 minutes into the interview. (Thanks, Sebastian!)

Geri Horner Shares Tribute with George Michael Fans

Amazon Ad

Geri Horner’s new single, “Angels in Chains”, came from her grief after George Michael died on Christmas day.

“I didn’t know quite what to do with my feelings so I put it in a song, which became ‘Angels In Chains’,” she said. “I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to work on this record with Chris Porter and the same team George had hand picked for his own projects. I am first and foremost a George Michael fan, so to be in the same studio with these amazingly gifted artists who have put their stamp on so many of my favorite records was a real privilege for me.”

She worked with George Michael’s extended musical family: Chris Cameron (Michael’s musical director), guitarist Phil Palmer and back up singers Shirley Lewis, Lucy Jules and Jay Henry for her tribute single.

She added: “This is our way of saying goodbye to our friend and music idol, and I hope George’s fans enjoy this as much as we have making it.”

“I am a George fan. I was a George Michael fan from the beginning. That was first. And so I want to share that with other George Michael fans,” Geri Horner also said.

The track is intended as a “beautiful, healing message” to anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one. In the process I found how healing making this record had been not only for me but also for everyone involved,” she said. “This is our way of saying goodbye to our friend and music idol, and I hope George’s fans enjoy this as much as we have making it.”

George Michael Tributes

In case you missed them, the Grammy Awards and Brits Awards recently paid tribute to George Michael.

Adele’s tribute at the Grammy Awards was noted for her stopping the song and asking to restart.  “I can’t mess this up for him,” Adele said. Adele was asked by the family to perform the song at the Grammy Awards. Reviews were mixed, with some loving the slow-paced “FastLove” to some hating it.

The tribute at the Brits began with Andrew Ridgeley, Shirlie (Holliman) Kemp and Pepsi DeMacque. It was a heartfelt tribute to their friend George Michael. It was followed by Coldplay’s Chris Martin singing a “duet” with George Michael of “A Different Corner.”

George Michael Will Be Buried by His Mother

No date has been posted for George Michael’s funeral, but some details have emerged.

George Michael to be ‘buried next to beloved mum’ in family’s private plot says that:

It’s believed he will be laid to rest in Highgate, North London, next to his mum Lesley Angold Panayiotou who passed away from cancer aged 60 in 1997.

Elton John ‘to sing Princess Diana-style tribute at George Michael’s funeral’ says that Elton John may sing “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” at George’s funeral.

According to George Michael’s post-mortem details emerge as coroner investigates his death:

As with all deaths where the cause of death is not immediately apparent, a post-mortem examination is to be undertaken in due course in order to confirm the cause of death.

This information is required before the coroner can decide whether there is a need for an inquest. If a natural cause of death is confirmed, there will be no need for an inquest.

All of this is in accordance with normal procedures and does not imply that there is currently any reason to believe the cause of death is in any way suspicious.
